This survey was initiated by GNA in 2000 with the backing of several major Australian utility organisations. A related survey covering energy exploration and production was introduced by the National Remuneration Centre in the early 1990's.

Since that time this current survey has developed and now covers organisations directly associated with electricity generation, transmission, distribution and delivery; gas production, transmission, distribution and delivery; water and wastewater catchment, storage, treatment and delivery; electricity, gas and water market operators, environmental, engineering and operational service providers in Australia.

The survey includes data from organisations in all States, both government and non-government owned. Over 250 jobs covering all key functions are examined (see list of jobs covered).

In 2009, a total of 65 power, water & utilities organisations contributed data to the survey.

Last survey, the range of engineering, technical, trading, and green collar jobs covered by the survey was expanded significantly to reflect changes in the industry: The most relevant being the Federal Government's Climate Change Initiative, proposed Emissions Trading Scheme, and response to prolonged water shortages.

The survey is conducted each year in April, and a Report is produced giving a comprehensive market analysis for each position surveyed. Data collection for the survey is online and includes a salary package calculation facility. Analyses include a breakdown of remuneration level by organisation size as measures by annual revenue, ownership (government or private), and sector (water or energy). Short-term incentive payments are examined to provide an analysis of incentive targets and ceilings.

CPI, and salary movements and forecasts are reported.

The survey is position description matched and job evaluated, and results are provided on that basis.

The price per survey participant for the upcoming issue (April 2010), including GST and delivery within Australia, is Aus$2,915. A licence to the National Remuneration Centre's online job evaluation system Jobscore(R) is available for installation with the survey.

Reports are currently provided online and in hardcopy form. A demonstration of the style of analysis provided online, and of the data collection, is available.

Survey results are only available to participants in the survey.
